MVC Debate and Forensics Team Competes; Phillips Qualifies for National Tournament
The Missouri Valley College Debate and Forensics team competed at the Missouri Association of Forensics Activities State Championship Tournament.
In NPDA (team parliamentary debate), the team of Evan Tindle (Freshman, Springfield, MO) and Cuauhtemoc Olvera (Freshman, Snyder, TX) compiled a record of 2-2 and finished in fifth place, one spot out of making it to elimination debates. The team of Eva Agcaoili (Junior, Willard, MO) and Camden Phillips (Freshman, Rapid City, SD) went 3-1 and advanced to the semifinals where they lost on a close 2-1 decision to the eventual tournament champions from Kansas Wesleyan University. Camden Phillips was also awarded third place speaker in the Open Parliamentary Debate division.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Sha Wilson (Freshman, Snyder, TX) compiled a record of 2-2, their best finish to date. Camden Phillips went 3-1 and made it to semifinals where they lost on a 2-1 decision to Missouri State University. Camden was also awarded the second place speaker in the open Lincoln-Douglas division.
Because of his tournament success, Camden Phillips has now qualified for the National Forensics Association National Tournament to be hosted at Illinois State University.
“I think that we found our footing a bit more as a cohesive team this weekend, and that felt really good,” said Coach David Bowers. “When you have all students moving in the same direction and towards the same goal it feels really incredible. I’m excited to see what happens as we move into nationals season.”
