Graphic Design and Studio Art

Our art program builds on drawing as the foundation. The graphic design and studio art majors are closely intertwined. Students are immersed in various approaches to solving design problems, and they emerge as informed and dynamic artists, designers, educators, and contributors to the art field. Professional training is balanced with the development of the whole person through a liberal arts approach. A sense of context is developed through a visual approach to learning art history, ancient through contemporary.

Students have extensive access to beautiful studio facilities. Art and Design faculty are working artists and studio classes are individualized, hands-on courses. The Morris Gallery of Contemporary Art brings in artists of national renown to enrich the campus and community, as part of a vibrant visiting artist/ guest critic program. Field trips to Kansas City are regularly incorporated into art classes. We are located in a quiet rural area, an hour from Kansas City, and we create a vibrant culture for art and design students, centered on the excitement of what is made in our studios, including opportunities for students to share their work in the community, through exhibits, symposia, art sales, and art/design projects and internships in the area. We offer excellent printmaking facilities, including silk screen, intaglio, and relief printing, to broaden image making approaches and build marketable skills. In our foundational Design Fundamentals class, art majors study with Marketing majors, building an early collaboration between these fields. Art majors’ study culminates in a senior exhibit, and all art majors develop a personal art website and an application-ready portfolio.
