MVC to Confer 238 Degrees at Commencement

Missouri Valley College will confer 238 degrees to students at its commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. on May 6 at Gregg-Mitchell Field on the MVC campus. The 2017 graduating class is the 128th class to graduate from MVC. The class consists of 227 undergraduate students and 11 students graduating from the College’s graduate program in community counseling.

MVC Alumna Dr. Marci Dowdy will give the Commencement address.

Dr. Marci Dowdy is a faculty member in the department of counseling, leadership, and special education at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC) with 30 years of experience in counseling, teaching, and central office administration at the elementary, middle school, high school and collegiate levels. In 2010, she was named the Southwest Missouri Post-Secondary Counselor of the Year.

Dr. Dowdy writes, speaks, and consults at the local, state, and national levels and holds leadership positions and membership in a number of professional organizations including the American School Counselor Association, Missouri School Counselor Association, and Southwest Missouri School Counselor Association. She has served the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on a number of initiatives including the Missouri team for college and career readiness at the White House convening, Missouri school counselor curriculum writing team, Missouri school counselor mentor program, Missouri new counselor institute, development of the Missouri school counselor candidate evaluation, Missouri school counselor performance assessment development committee, and the Missouri school counselor advisory board.  Dr. Dowdy is also a Missouri Supreme Court appointee for the Region XV disciplinary committee. In addition, she served on the board of directors and is past president of the Ozarks Counseling Center.  Her research and presentation interests focus on data driven school counseling programs, school counseling site supervision, and college and career readiness for K-12 students.

Dr. Dowdy graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with an emphasis in social work. She holds a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in guidance and counseling from Missouri State University and a doctorate degree in higher education leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Dowdy currently serves as a member of the Missouri Valley College Board of Trustees.

Dr. Diane Bartholomew, vice president of academic affairs, will present two students with the Charles L. Bacon Distinguished Service Award. The award is given annually to a senior man and woman, which are voted on by the senior class.
