Art Student to Host Senior Art ShowPosted April 12, 2017
MVC senior Visual Arts student, Justin Whitten, will host a solo art exhibition titled “Characters with Cans,” April 22-29. The exhibit will be on display at Shortwave Coffee located at 915 Alley A, in Columbia, Mo. Exhibit times include: 3 p.m.-4 p.m. on April 22, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 24-28 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 29.
Justin's show is a collection of specific cartoons that are iconic to society and nostalgically easier to connect with individually. Each figure that he chose to represent, portrays a significant character trait, for example, loyalty and sarcasm are a couple of traits that he has in common with these figures. The cartoons hold a spray can to show Justin’s way of communicating through his medium of choice; the spray can is the cartoons leverage to express the character in itself.
“There is a character in all of us, and with visual communication we can convey our personality,” Justin said.
Justin is studying interdisciplinary studies with three focuses; visual arts, humanities and marketing. These three specific disciplines of interest will allow him to reach his goals in obtaining and managing his own design business. Justin is also a student coach for the Missouri Valley men's wrestling team and is very involved with community service and club activities inside and outside of school. In addition, Justin is known for a few prominent murals around Marshall.
An opening reception for the collection will be held on April 22 from 3 p.m.-4 p.m. p.m. at Shortwave Coffee. The reception is free and open to the public.
