Marshall, Mo. (November 12, 2016)- The Missouri Valley College men’s soccer team hosted Grand View (Mo.) University in the championship match of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament, Saturday night at Gregg-Mitchell Field.  The Vikings played GVU to a tie through double-overtime, but Missouri Valley lost the match in penalty kicks.

Grand View got out early on Missouri Valley, scoring the opening goal of the match just past the ten-minute mark.  The Vikings nearly had an answer just one-minute later, but a shot from Senior Midfielder Alejandro Corella (Madrid, Spain) was saved.  Sophomore Goalkeeper Patrick Irankunda (Ashford, England) made his first save of the match, near the midway point of the first half, to keep the MVC deficit at 1-0.  Senior Forward George Limbert (Leicester, England) nearly leveled the score with just over 13-minutes remaining in the half, but his shot hit off the crossbar.  Missouri Valley continued to apply pressure to GVU, getting another shot on goal from Corella.  With just over four-minutes remaining in the half, Missouri Valley got its goal, as Corella set up Sophomore Defender Joan Matorell (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) for a goal to level the score at 1-1.  Irankunda had to make two more saves in the final moments of the half, but the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

The second half featured a number of opportunities for the two teams, as Matorell and Senior Forward Rafael Alcaraz (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) each had chances saved in the opening eight-minutes of action.  Junior Forward Slaven Baskalo (Novi Sad, Serbia) had a shot saved just past the 10-minute mark, but Irankunda had to come up with a pair of saves minutes later.  The two teams continued to put chances on goal, as Missouri Valley had two shots saved near the 75-minute mark, and Irankunda had to come up with a save in that time as well.  Both teams could not find the game-winning goal, sending the match into overtime.

The first overtime period featured Irankunda coming up with two saves early in the extra period, but Freshman Defender Uros Illic (Nova Pazova, Serbia) nearly had the game-winner, as his attempt was saved in the final moments.  In the second overtime period, neither team could put a shot on goal, sending the match into a penalty kick shootout to determine the tournament champion.  Missouri Valley missed two of its shots, while Grand View converted each of its four PK’s to earn the tournament championship with a 4-1 finish in the shootout.

Leading the way for Missouri Valley was Matorell who scored his first goal of the season.  Corella added his fourth assist.  Irankunda made seven saves in goal for Missouri Valley.

The Viking season comes to an end with an overall record of 13-5-3.  Grand View earns an automatic berth into the 2016 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Tournament, and sits with a 13-6-2 record.
