Marshall, Mo. (August 30, 2014)- The No. 15 Missouri Valley College men’s soccer team welcomed in No. 12 Grand View (Iowa) University to Gregg-Mitchell Field for a non-conference matchup. The Vikings used two first half goals to hold off Grand View for a 3-0 win.
The first goal of the season came quickly for Missouri Valley as Junior Midfielder Carlos Berastain Munar (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) scored off a free-kick from 25-yards away to put MVC ahead with less than three minutes gone in the match. MVC created more chances through the early stages of the half, creating two corner kicks and a shot from Sophomore Defender Marc Heaman (Newcastle, England) that bounced off the cross bar. With just under 15-minutes to play in the first half the Vikings extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal by Sophomore Forward Rafael Alcaraz (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), off an assist from Junior Midfielder Raul Beneit (Cadiz, Spain). Grand View had its best chance of the half come with seconds remaining before halftime off a corner kick, but MVC went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Grand View came out and got some chances early in the second half to try and get back into the match. Back-to-back chances in the first 10-minutes were blocked in front of goal, with the second attempt going too high. MVC eventually began to build up an attack and with 13-minutes to play in the match Sophomore Forward Geroge Limbert (Lincoln, England) scored to put MVC up 3-0. The Vikings were able to hold off any Grand View threat late in the match and finished off their season opener with a 3-0 win.
The Vikings were led by Munar, Alcaraz and Limbert who all scored one goal apiece, while Beneit recorded an assist. Senior Goalkeeper Christos Kontemiris (Athens, Greece) made six saves in the game and recorded the shutout for MVC.
The Vikings improve to 1-0 on the season while Grand View falls to 2-1.
Missouri Valley will next play Monday evening as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. Kansas Wesleyan will visit Marshall, Mo., with the women’s game set for 4:30 p.m. and the men’s game scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
