Beginning fall 2014, Missouri Valley College will offer a writing studies concentration for students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English.

The writing studies concentration involves study and analysis of audience, context, and purpose in written and multimedia communication for business, entertainment, and professional settings. Students take classes in advocacy and grant writing, creative writing, technical and professional writing, and speech writing and criticism.

"Our added concentration in writing studies reflects a national trend to draw attention to the communication and analytical skills that the English degree teaches. Students with a degree in English have many transferable skills for careers in law, international business, public relations, and even medicine. Writing studies at MVC is designed so that students who are interested in developing their writing and analytical abilities can take advantage of this new concentration alone or in conjunction with another major. I look forward to seeing all of the different contexts in which students will use the skills they develop,” said Dr. Jennifer Eimers, chair of the English division.

The division will continue to offer a concentration in literary studies.
