Viking Rodeo Set for College National FinalsPosted June 10, 2014
The Missouri Valley College rodeo teams are preparing to compete in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., later this month. A total of eight Viking student-athletes will compete for both the men’s and women’s programs, with the men’s team competing for a possible team National championship.
Qualifying on the men’s side is Sophomore Dalton Kingery (Monroe, Iowa) who will compete in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and in the men’s all-around. Kingery enters the CNFR after finishing first in the Ozark Region in saddle bronc riding and the all-around categories and fourth in bareback riding.
Also competing for the men’s team are Freshman Fenton Nelson (Iowa City, Iowa) and Freshman JD Struxness (Appleton, Minn.) in steer wrestling. Nelson finished second and Struxness finished fifth in the Ozark Region in steer wrestling.
Senior Ben Runyon (Tallula, Ill.) will compete in the team roping competition after finishing fifth in the Ozark Region while Sophomore Coleman Rude (Silver Lake, Ind.) and Sophomore Travis Smith (West Plains, Mo.) compete in bull riding. Rude finished second and Smith seventh in bull riding in the Ozark Region. The Viking men’s rodeo team finished second in the Ozark Region during the regular season.
For the women’s team, Junior Kacey Struxness (Appleton, Minn.) and Junior Twyla Reid (Albion, Ill.) will compete in breakaway roping. Struxness finished first in breakaway roping in the Ozark Region regular season while Reid placed second.
The CNFR takes place at the Casper Events Center running June 15-21.
