MVC Track and Field Prepares for National Meet

Marshall, Mo. (May 21, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College outdoor track and field programs are sending seven student-athletes to the 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.  The National meet begins Thursday and lasts through Saturday.


Six members of the men’s track and field team will compete at the National meet led by Freshman Phillip Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya) who qualified in both the 10000 meter run and the marathon.  Also qualifying in running events are Senior Ignacio Franco (Cadiz, Spain) in the 800 meter run, Freshman Spencer Head (Camas, Wash.) in the 800 meter run and Freshman Nate Martin (Jackson, Mo.) in the marathon.  Competing in field events include Junior Andrew Longboy (Milani, Hawaii) in the high jump and Senior Byron Evans (Chicago, Ill.) in the triple jump.


Cheruiyot will compete in the 10000 meter run Thrusday at 8:45 p.m.  Friday will feature Franco and Head competing in the 800 meter prelims at 2:20 p.m., and Longboy competing the high jump at 6 p.m.  Saturday Cheruiyot and Martin will compete in the marathon at 6 a.m., Evans will compete at 2 p.m., in the triple jump and the 800 meter finals take place at 5 p.m.


Junior Sarah Niemeier will represent the MVC women’s team at the National meet as she will compete at 6 a.m., Saturday in the marathon.
