Posted May 3, 2014

Marshall, Mo. (May 1, 2014)- The No. 20 Missouri Valley College men’s lacrosse team knocked off No. 22 DePaul University, the defending conference champions, in a hard fought battle 13-10 Saturday evening in the GRLC Division II semifinals at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

Facing off against the team that handed MVC ITS only loss of the regular season, the Vikings started the game off with a bang as Junior Midfielder J.J. Licata (Bel Air, Md.) scored the first goal of the game less than one minute in. However, DePaul came right back to score two goals and take a 2-1 lead midway through the quarter. Sophomore Midfielder Tim Setree (Annapolis, Md.) netted his first goal of the game late in the quarter to tie it up 2-2 before the Blue Demons scored the final goal to lead MVC 3-2 after the first quarter of play.

Just like the first quarter, the Vikings got a quick goal early on, this time from Junior Long Stick Midfielder Steve Sadler (Baltimore, Md.) to tie the game 3-3. Midway through the quarter, DePaul made two goals to go back up 5-3. With less than one minute remaining in the first half, Licata netted his second goal of the game to cut the Blue Demons halftime lead to 5-4.

Coming out of the locker room to start the second half, the Vikings were reenergized by Coach Kevin Totaro’s halftime speech and once again scored two early goals from Licata and Sophomore Attacker John Milani (Glenwood, Md.) to regain the lead at 6-5. The remainder of the quarter saw each team exchanging three goals apiece and allowed MVC to take a 9-8 lead into the final quarter.

Keeping the early quarter scoring streak alive, Setree netted his second goal of the game that put the Vikings into double digits on the scoreboard at 10-8. In hopes of a comeback, the Blue Demons scored another goal to cut the Vikings lead to 10-9 before MVC scored two more goals to increase its lead to 12-9. The final two minutes of the game saw DePaul score a goal that was followed by another MVC goal from Setree that allowed the Vikings to wrap up their 13-10 victory and advance to the conference championship game.

Licata led the way for the Vikings with four goals, one assist, and five ground balls while Setree also added four goals. Milani netted two goals and Sadler added one goal. Also, Junior Attackers Greg Abendshoen (Baltimore, Md.) and Doug Brown (Baltimore, Md.) had one goal and three assists and one goal and one assist, respectively. Freshman Goalkeeper Brandon Minshall (Centennial, Colo.) helped out defensively by coming up with 19 saves.

MVC improves to 14-1 on the season. Up next, the Vikings will play against Washington University-St. Louis in the GRLC Division II Tournament championship game Sunday at 12 p.m. at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
