MVC Tennis Players Earn Season Awards

Marshall, Mo. (April 28, 2014)- Members of the Missouri Valley College tennis teams were recognized for their play during the 2014 season with all-conference honors.  A total of seven ​MVC ​student-athletes received recognition in the Independent Group which is comprised of teams from the Heart of America Athletic Conference, American Midwest Conference and the Frontier Conference.

Earning first team singles honors on the men's side ​were Senior Luiz Moura (Piracicaba, Brazil) and Sophomore Lucas Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil).  Named to the second team​ in​ singles were Junior Wesley Ng (Brampton, Ontario) and Senior Brock Hughes (Gilford, Ontario).  All four were also named to the all-conference​ doubles​ first team.

On the women's side the Vikings were led by Freshman Lilian Blasque (Andradina, Brazil) who was named to the first team in both singles and doubles.  Also, Adela Gil was named to the first team​ in​ doubles and Freshman Betsabe Vasquez (Guayaquill, Ecuador) was named to the ​singles ​

second team. "I am very pleased with so many of our players receiving this type of recognition for their play during the season," said Head Tennis Coach Ryan Carney.  "Both teams played well through the season with long winning streaks and will help us build toward the future."

Both teams competed at the Independent Grouping Tournament Friday in Joplin, Mo., but both were eliminated in the semifinal round.  The MVC women's team finished 13-4 on the season while the men's team ended the season with a 14-2 record.
