MVC Tennis Teams End Season Friday at Conference TournamentPosted April 26, 2014
Marshall, Mo. (April 25, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College tennis teams played in the NAIA Independent Championship Tournament in Joplin, Mo., Friday. Both the Viking men’s and women’s teams advanced to the tournament semifinals.
The women’s team picked up a 5-4 victory against Lindenwood University-Belleville in the quarterfinals of the tournament. In the semifinal round the Vikings lost to No. 12 Graceland University 5-1 in matches. The Vikings end the 2014 season with a 13-4 overall record since winning 12 matches in the 2009 season.
The Viking men’s tennis earned an 8-1 victory over Baker University in the quarterfinal round. The Vikings entered the tournament in the “others receiving votes” category of the NAIA Men’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Vikings played No. 20 Lewis and Clark (Idaho) in the semifinal round. MVC lost the semifinal matchup 5-2. The loss ends the season for MVC at 14-2 on the season, the best season for the Vikings win-wise since before the 2008 season. The Vikings had won 14-straight before losing in the tournament semifinals.
