Marshall, Mo. (April 22, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College baseball went on the road Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup with William Woods University. William Woods entered the game in the “others receiving votes” category of the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

William Woods came out and used five hits to score seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. MVC was able to put together some offense in the top of the third inning as Junior Third Baseman Trevor Duffy (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) led the inning off with a walk followed by a Senior Right Fielder Ryan Anderson (Kansas City, Mo.) single. Sophomore Center Fielder Jake Stafford (Richmond, Mo.) then put a single into centerfield to bring home Duffy for first Viking run of the game. The Vikings were limited to just one base runner over the next three innings, but threatened in the top of the eighth. Stafford worked a one-out walk and two batters later, Hartin hit a single to shallow centerfield. However, the two were left stranded and William Woods was able to add one more run to its lead in the bottom of the eighth to make it at 9-1 game. The top of the ninth started with a Junior Second Baseman Tim Roddy (Yakima, Wash.) walk and a Sophomore Pinch Hitter Lucas Doerhoff (Jefferson City, Mo.) single. Both were moved up a base after Duffy grounded out, but the Vikings were unable to drive either runner home and lost to William Woods 9-1.
Leading MVC was Hartin who finished two for four from the plate with one double. Anderson was two for three while Stafford finished one for three with one RBI. Senior Pitcher Brent Kalwei (Kansas City, Mo.) went four innings giving up three hits and one earned run in relief for MVC with Senior Pitcher Brady Nowak (Belleville, Ill.) picking up the loss.
