MVC Adds Online Associates Degree in Health Information Systems

Posted April 11, 2014

Missouri Valley College has added a new completely online degree program. Beginning fall 2014, MVC will offer an online Associates of Applied Science degree in health information systems.

The program consists of a combination of computer information systems, basic medical information and health care administration courses. The program can be completed in as little as two years. Both eight and 16 week courses are available.

“There is a great demand for health information systems professionals and this online degree option opens doors for individuals who are unable to commit to the traditional on-campus environment,” said Dr. Karla Bruntzel, dean of the school of nursing and health sciences. “The health information systems degree program would be great for individuals who are looking to advance their technical skills in a field that is in great demand.”

The demand for a health information systems degree is expected to increase as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has authorized the use of electronic medical records in healthcare facilities. Health information systems professionals are needed in all areas of the country and within all medical setting.  The portion of U.S. hospitals using electronic medical records has more than doubled since 2009. That number will continue to rise as doctors and healthcare facilities are becoming liable for financial penalties under Medicare if they are not using electronic medical records by 2015.

Other completely online degree programs offered at MVC include bachelor’s degrees in psychology, business administration, and criminal justice. The College also offers a variety of general education courses online. MVC is now enrolling for summer and fall online classes. For more information go to
