MVC MEN’S WRESTLING PREPARES FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
Marshall, Mo. (March 6, 2014)- The No. 5 Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team is getting ready to compete in the NAIA Wrestling National Championship in Topeka, Kan., Friday and Saturday. The Vikings will send ten student-athletes to the National competition, nine of which have qualified in previous seasons.
The Vikings will have two entrants in the 125 pound weight class, as No. 10 Junior Logan Welch (Lexington, Mo.) will wrestle in his third National tournament and Sophomore Ryan Stearns (Williston, Vt.) will wrestle at Nationals for a second time. Welch holds a 4-4 record at the National tournament in his two appearances, both in the 133 pound weight class. Stearns went 0-2 in his appearance at 125 pounds in 2013.
At 149 pounds, the Vikings will be represented by No. 3 Sophomore Jake Ekster (Houston, Texas) making his second appearance at the National championship. In 2013, Ekster finished with a 7-1 record at the National tournament, placing No. 3 overall in the weight class and earning all-American status.
MVC will be represented by Sophomore Dylan King (Hamilton, Mo.) in the 165 pound weight class. King will make his second appearance at the National championship, having gone 1-2 at the 2013 tournament.
Junior Riley Boomer (Sheridan, Mich.) will be making his first appearance as a Viking in the National tournament, wrestling in the 174 pound weight class.
Two Vikings will wrestle in the 197 pound bracket, as No. 3 Senior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) and No. 13 Senior Carl Lawrence (Sullivan, Mo.), both make their third appearances at the National championship. Manu has a 4-5 record at the National tournament with a sixth place finish in 2013. Lawrence is 6-3 at the National tournament, including a National runner-up finish at 197 pounds in 2013.
Two Vikings will compete in the 285 pound weight class as No. 2 Junior Dan Mueller (Collinsville, Ill.) makes his third appearance at the National tournament and No. 6 Sophomore Gabi Musallam (San Diego, Calif.) makes his first appearance. Mueller has a 2-4 record in his previous two National tournament appearances.
The NAIA Wrestling National Championship takes place at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan., and begins Friday with Session I at 10 a.m., that will include the first two championship bracket rounds and two consolation bracket rounds. Session II begins Friday at 6 p.m., and features the championship quarterfinals and two consolation rounds. Session III begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Championship semifinals, two consolation rounds and the consolation medal rounds. Session IV begins Saturday at 7 p.m. and features the National championship matches in all ten weight classes.
An alumni and friends social will be held in conjuction with the National tournament. The event will be held Saturday from 3 p.m.-5 p.m., at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka, Kan.
