VIKING BASKETBALL TEAMS SET FOR POSTSEASON PLAY
Marshall, Mo. (March 4, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin postseason play this week, both going on the road for first round matchups in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament.
The MVC women’s team will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament, and will travel to Atchison, Kan., for a matchup with No. 4 seed Benedictine College. The Vikings split their two meetings with the Ravens earlier this season, winning at Benedictine on Jan. 18, 65-59. The Ravens defeated the Vikings in their matchup in Marshall, Mo., back on Feb. 23, 65-58. The Vikings enter the contest with one of its best records in recent program history at 18-12, while Benedictine sits at 20-10. The Vikings will be led by two players recently selected to the HAAC All-Conference team. Senior Forward Gabi Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) was named to the all-conference first team, and Junior Guard TaLaya Earls (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named to the honorable mention list. Thursday’s first round game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
The Viking men’s basketball team will enter postseason play with a 15-14 overall record and the No. 6 seed in the HAAC tournament. MVC will travel to Olathe, Kan., to play No. 3 seed MidAmerica Nazarene University, which owns a 20-10 overall mark. The Pioneers swept the two regular season matchups, winning in Marshall, Mo., on Dec. 14, 91-73. MNU won the game in Olathe, Kan., on Feb. 8, 95-86. The Vikings will be led by three players who were selected to the HAAC All-Conference team. Junior Guard Brad Hamilton (Pittsfield, Mo.) was named to the second team all-conference and was selected as the HAAC Newcomer of the Year. Also, both Junior Forward James Lane (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) and Senior Guard Jim Thomas (St. Louis, Mo.) were named to the honorable mention list. Wednesday’s first round game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
