MVC MEN’S LACROSSE WINS HOME DEBUT OVER ROCKHURST SATURDAY
Marshall, Mo. (February 22, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College men’s lacrosse picks up their second win in program history with a 16-9 victory over Rockhurst University in their home debut Saturday.
The Vikings got out to a quick lead by scoring the first five goals of the game in the first five minutes. Junior J.J. Licata (Bel Air, Md.) scored two of his three total goals within the five minute span along with Junior Greg Abendshoen (Catonsville, Md.) who netted two goals as well. Rockhurst responded to the quick MVC start with three goals of its own toward the end of the quarter to trail the Vikings 5-3. The second quarter was not as high scoring as the first with Missouri Valley scoring two goals from Junior Doug Brown (Baltimore, Md) and Rockhurst scoring one goal. The second of Brown’s goals was scored as time expired to end the half putting the Vikings at a 7-4 advantage.
To start the second half the Vikings wasted little time to extend their lead. Brown netted his third goal of the game just eleven seconds into the half. The Vikings used the third quarter to continue building on their lead as they scored four more goals and held Rockhurst to just one goal ending the third quarter with a 12-5 lead over the Hawks. Again to start the fourth quarter, the Vikings did not waste any time scoring as they scored just fifty-six seconds after the quarter started. The Vikings went on a bit of a cold spell after the quick goal though and allowed Rockhurst to score twice and pull back within 13-7 midway through the quarter. For the remainder of the game each team would go on exchanging goals with Missouri Valley netting the final goal of the game with fifty-six seconds remaining to cap off the 16-9 victory.
The Vikings were led by Brown who totaled four goals and one assist and Licata who netted three goals and four assists. Also, Junior Max Slutsky (Raleigh, N.C.) put in two goals and helped out by adding three assists while Abendshoen added two goals of his own and one assist. Also, scoring for the Vikings was Junior Jeremy Frosch (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and Sophomore John Milani (Glenwood, Md.) with two goals apiece while Sophomore Tim Setree (Annapolis, Md.) added one goal. Freshman Goalkeeper Brandon Minshall (Centennial, Colo.) had another outstanding game with 22 saves. Defensively, the Vikings came up with 36 ground balls with Licata leading the way with 10 of his own.
MVC improves to 2-0 on the season while Rockhurst University falls to 1-2.
Up next, the Vikings will travel to St. Louis, Mo., to play Missouri Baptist University at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
