MVC Men's Wrestling Moves to No. 2 In New Poll

Marshall, Mo. (January 22, 2014)- The Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team moved up one spot to the No. 2 ranking in the latest NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 Poll released Wednesday. The Vikings overtook Montana State University-Northern which fell from No. 2 to No. 3 in the latest poll, but MVC trails No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) University. This is the highest ranking for the men’s program since starting the 2010-2011 season ranked No. 2 in the coaches’ poll.


Since the poll was released earlier this month, the Vikings competed in the NAIA National Duals Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, placing sixth with a 3-2 record. Also, last week the Vikings hosted the MVC Invitational and finished second in the team standings. Three Vikings won their individual weight classes at the event, including Sophomore Jake Ekster (Houston, Texas) at 149 pounds, Senior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) at 197 pounds and Junior Dan Mueller (Collinsville, Ill.) at 285 pounds.


The Vikings have 10 wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes, led by Ekster who remains ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds.

Sophomore Ryan Stearns (Williston, Vt.) who dropped one spot to No. 7 at 125 pounds

Junior Logan Welch (Lexington, Mo.) moved up one spot to no. 11 at 125 pounds.

Sophomore Todd Brackett (Farmington, Mo.) moved up one spot to No. 14 at 133 pounds

Junior Nico Martinez (Ontario, Ore.) fell to the No. 13 ranking at 165 pounds

Junior Riley Boomer (Sheridan, Mich.) dropped two spots to No. 10 at 174 pounds

Senior Josh Manu (North Providence, R.I.) dropped one spot to No. 3 at 197 pounds

Senior Carl Lawrence (Sullivan, Mo.) dropped one spot to No. 4 at 197 pounds,

Junior Daniel Mueller (Collinsville, Ill.) moved up five spots to No. 3 at 285 pounds

Sophomore Gabi Musallam (San Diego, Calif.) fell two spots to No. 5 at 285 pounds.


The No. 2 Vikings will next be in action over the weekend as they travel to the Mustang Open in Conway, Ark., Saturday.
