MVC Men's Volleyball Wins Three Matches at MSJ Tournament

 Marshall, Mo. (January 18, 2014)- The No. 9 Missouri Valley College men’s volleyball team played three matches Saturday at the Mt. St. Joseph Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Vikings opened play with a 3-0 victory over Rust College and followed that up with a 3-1 victory over Lourdes College. In the final match against the host school Mt. St. Joseph, the Vikings won 3-0.


In the opening match against Rust College the Vikings cruised to a 25-8, 25-3, 25-8 victory. Leading the way for MVC was Junior Setter Joao Adolpho Martins (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) who finished with 17 assists. Freshman Opposite Lucas Wurr (Curitiba, Brazil) had seven kills and Freshman Outside Hitter Tom Brandstetter (Muehldorf, Germany) had seven kills.


In the second match of the day the Vikings fought off Lourdes College 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16. Leading MVC in the victory was Senior Middle Blocker Jake Haar (La Mesa, Calif.) who had 19 kills, seven digs and two aces. Junior Outside Hitter Zac Brown (Plainfield, Ill.) had 10 kills while Senior Setter Will McCracken (Goleta, Calif.) had 26 assists and four digs. Sophomore Libero Ding Hui (Hangzhou, Zhenjiang China) had 17 digs.


In the final match for MVC, the Vikings defeated Mt. St. Joseph 25-11, 25-20, 25-18.   Leading the Vikings was Sophomore Outside Hitter Jake Peterson (San Jose, Calif.) who had 10 kills, seven digs and two aces. Also, both Wurr and Haar finished with 11 kills. Senior Outside Hitter Peterson Silva (Nova Era, Brazil) had eight digs. McCracken finished with 22 assists while Martins had 20 assists.


The Vikings improve to 4-0 on the season with the three wins Saturday.


The Vikings will play their first home match of the season when they host Graceland University at the Burns Athletic Complex. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
